Abrasive Wheels Regulations Training Course.

This training course is designed to meet the requirements for training in line with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 1998) for safety in the use of abrasive wheels and includes a certificate of attendance, course notes and light refreshments. 

Abtec Industries are specialists in abrasives and the training is conducted by senior staff with many years experience in the abrasive industry. Our trainers have achieved 'Professional trainer certification' from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

Typical environments include small workshops and toolrooms, fabricators, maintenance departments, construction sites and local authority workshops etc.

The training is of approximately 6 1/2 hours duration. Light refreshments are included. 

Suitability: This course is designed for the occasional user through to the more experienced user of portable grinding/cutting machines powered by either petrol, compressed air or electricity and/or bench/pedestal mounted machines, surface and cylindrical grinders. For your safety full personal protective equipment will be provided by Abtec.

Definition and analysis of abrasive wheels

  • Definition of a grinding wheel.
  • How an abrasive wheel works.
  • Abrasive and bond types.
  • Abrasive wheel marking system.
  • Typical abrasive wheel specifications and improvements to the grinding and cutting process.
  • Speeds of abrasive wheels.

Part 3

Receipt, handling, storage and inspection of abrasive wheels

  • Receipt of wheels.
  • Handling prior to use.
  • Correct storage.
  • Inspection, examination and testing.

Part 4

Machines and work areas

  • Types of flanges.
  • Maximum operating speed.
  • Condition of spindles and bearings.
  • Machine controls.
  • Provision of guards and work-rests.
  • Condition of floors and work area.

Part 5

  • Inspection of the machine and work area.
  • Personal protective equipment assessment.
  • Correct procedures for removing and mounting abrasive wheels.
  • Wheel balancing.
  • Dressing of wheels.
  • Assessment of delegates practical ability in the mounting of abrasive wheels.
  • Practical demonstration of grinding and cutting techniques.
  • Written test paper.
  • Review.
